What to know
- Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a press briefing Tuesday morning with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that B-52 bombers are flying over Iranian airspace. This is the first time the U.S. military has used the bombers in the war with Iran.
- Hegseth indicated at a Pentagon briefing that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is not a key objective and that the Trump administration is open to a deal to end the war. Trump said later Tuesday that he thinks the U.S. could be done with Iran within two to three weeks.
- Gas prices in the U.S. rose above $4 per gallon this morning, the highest since 2022, as Iran continues its stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz. Stocks, however, opened higher, signaling investor optimism.
- U.S. and Iraqi officials said Tuesday that a suspect with ties to an Iran-linked militia has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of an American journalist in Iraq. The State Department noted that the journalist had been warned about threats against her as recently as Monday night.
