Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* The lengthy list of U.S. House members giving up their seats continues to grow: Republican Rep. Barry Loudermilk of Georgia announced Wednesday afternoon that he’s retiring at the end of his current term.
* It’s Election Day in New Jersey’s 11th District, where local Democratic voters will choose a nominee to succeed Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who gave up her congressional seat after winning statewide office. Among the key contenders is former Rep. Tom Malinowski, who lost a bid for re-election in a different district in 2022.
* In New Hampshire, state Rep. David Nagel switched parties this week, leaving the Republican Party to become a Democrat, which is notable in part because Nagel represents a district that backed Donald Trump by 10 points in the 2024 cycle.
* Former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, best known for his efforts on Jan. 6, 2021, came up short in his 2024 congressional campaign, but this week, the Maryland Democrat announced that he’s trying again this year, hoping to succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer.
* Georgia’s crowded Republican gubernatorial primary got a little more complicated this week, with health care business owner Rick Jackson joining the GOP field and vowing to spend $50 million of his own money on his candidacy. * With about a month to go before Texas’ closely watched Republican U.S. Senate primary, allies of incumbent Sen. John Cornyn have spent a staggering $50 million on advertising on his behalf since last July, while his principal rival, state Attorney General Ken Paxton, hasn’t spent much of anything on the contest. * And in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul was in the market for a new running mate after the state’s incumbent lieutenant governor, Antonio Delgado, launched a Democratic primary campaign against her. This week, the governor announced that former New York City Council President Adrienne Adams will be her 2026 running mate.
