A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., indicted Trump on Aug. 1, 2023, in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into 2020 election interference and the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump faces four charges, including conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Donald Trump and 18 others were indicted in Georgia on Aug. 14, 2023 as part of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ 2020 election interference investigation. Trump faces 13 felony counts, including racketeering charges under the state Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
A federal grand jury in Miami indicted Trump and his aide Walt Nauta on June 8, 2023, in the special counsel’s classified documents investigation. A superseding indictment on July 27, 2023, charged Trump and Nauta with additional counts and added a third co-defendant, Mar-a-Lago employee Carlos De Oliveira. The former president faces 40 felony counts, including willful retention of national defense information in violation of the Espionage Act.
A grand jury in New York City indicted Trump on March 30, 2023, as part of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation into a $130,000 hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. The former president faces 34 counts of falsifying business records. A trial has been set for March 25, 2024.
CIVIL CASES
New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil fraud lawsuit against Trump, the Trump Organization and his three eldest children — Donald Trump, Jr., Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump — on Sept. 21, 2022. James is seeking $250 million in penalties and to bar the former president and his co-defendants from running a business in the state again. Ivanka Trump has since been dropped from the lawsuit. A trial has been set for Oct. 2, 2023.
A New York City jury found Trump liable for defamation and sexual abuse in author E. Jean Carroll’s civil lawsuit on May 9, 2023, and awarded her $5 million in damages.
Carroll filed an amended lawsuit on May 22, 2023, seeking an additional $10 million in damages after Trump again claimed her allegations were “made-up” following the jury’s verdict. The filing is part of a separate defamation lawsuit she filed against Trump in 2019. A trial for that lawsuit been set for Jan. 15, 2024.
