What is a weighted hula hoop?
A weighted hula hoop is exactly what it sounds like — one that weighs a bit more than a standard model. “They can weigh anywhere from one to five pounds and can make hula hooping more challenging,” says Nicole Davis, a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach at Garage Gym Reviews. Some weighted hula hoops are simply heavier versions of the classics. But the ones often seen on social media involve a plastic belt that goes around your waist and has a weight hanging off a rope attached to the belt. As you hula, the goal is to get that roped weight to move around your body.
Why does making them heavier help with fitness? “Weighted hula hoops work by adding resistance to the motion of spinning the hoop around your waist,” explains Stephen Sheehan, a certified personal trainer at BarBend. “That added weight forces your core muscles to engage more deeply to keep the hoop going. It’s basically a low-impact way to get your abs, hips and even your glutes working while getting your heart rate up.”
What are the benefits of a weighted hula hoop?
According to our experts, weighted hula hoops aren’t just a trendy viral sensation — they have some real deal benefits, too. First, they can keep your workout entertaining. “They’re especially good for people who get bored with workouts easily,” says Davis. “I’m a big proponent of choosing movement that feels fun to you because you’re more likely to stick with it, and consistency is the most important factor in a fitness journey.” Another perk: They’re easy to use at home, which means you can more easily fit in a workout if you are short on time.
Beyond that, weighted hula hooping is good for your body. “You’re getting core stability, better hip mobility, and some cardio benefits,” says Davis. “It’s not going to replace strength training, but it does support better movement overall — a strong core is super important for everyday life.”
How to use a weighted hula hoop
Want to try the trend? “Start with a lighter hoop — around one to two pounds — and don’t go too hard right away,” warns Sheehan. “If you overdo it, you might end up with sore hips or bruising. And if you’ve got any back issues, check in with a doctor or physical therapist first.”
In terms of timing, Davis recommends starting small with just a few minutes and slowly working your way up to doing 15 to 20 minutes at a time. “Also, make sure you switch directions halfway through so you aren’t always turning the same way,” she says, adding that form is important. “Make sure that your core stays engaged and you aren’t arching your lower back.”
