The Nintendo Switch 2 launches today, eight years after the launch of the original Switch. As the successor to our longtime favorite handheld gaming console, Nintendo’s latest console has a lot to live up to. I’ll be testing it over the next few weeks to see if it’s worth the upgrade, but in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about the Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle (Out of stock)

$499.00 at Walmart
$499.99 at Best Buy
$499.99 at Target

What to know

This bundle includes Mario Kart World for $30 less than buying it separately.

The Switch 2 looks similar to the original, but has some significant changes on the outside and internally.

The console is bigger, with a 7.9-inch screen (up from 6.2-inches). The new Joy-Con 2 is also larger and the controllers attach magnetically instead of using a rail. Plus, you can use the controllers like a mouse in certain games. There is also a new C button, which activates Game Chat features that let you chat with friends and family online using the new built-in microphone.

Nintendo also extended the entire length of the kickstand so it fits across the bottom of the console, making it much more stable this time around.

The bigger changes are internal. In handheld mode, the screen supports a more detailed 1080p resolution, a faster 120Hz refresh rate and high dynamic range (HDR), meaning more clarity in bright and dark images. When docked, the console can display resolutions up to 4K. The console also comes with 256GB of internal storage, significantly more than the original’s 32GB.

You can buy the Nintendo Switch 2 console for $449 or you can purchase a bundle, which includes the all-new Mario Kart World, for $499. While stores may receive additional inventory on launch day, expect limited supply and difficulties ordering online.

Nintendo Switch 2 Games

The Switch 2 launches with dozens of games and more are coming out soon. Below, are a few notable titles we think you should know about.

Mario Kart World

$79.00 at Walmart
$79.99 at Best Buy

What to know

It’s been over 10 years since the last brand new Mario Kart title launched. This new version looks like an exciting reinvention of the formula.

I got a chance to play Mario Kart World during a preview event last month, and it is by far my most anticipated new game for Switch 2. The biggest change from the previous version is that outside of race tracks (which there are plenty of), you can freely drive around a giant open world, exploring different locales, climates and vistas. There are also new modes, new characters, new tracks, new items and too much to list here.

Donkey Kong Bananza (pre-order)

The newest Donkey Kong game launches July 17th.

It’s been over 10 years since the last big Donkey Kong game (Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze), and this new title is wildly different from its predecessors. This game is rated M for 18 years old and up, and is a critically acclaimed stealth-action hit.

Frequently asked questions

Will Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?

Yes. The Nintendo Switch 2 will play both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games along with new Switch 2 titles. Certain titles may not be supported or fully compatible, according to the brand. You can also share Nintendo Switch 1 games to your Nintendo Switch 2 console virtually through the new Virtual Game Cards system.

Why do Switch 2 games cost so much?

Not all Switch 2 games cost more than their predecessors. So far, select titles like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza and a few others are priced at $80 for the digital edition and $90 for the physical version, more than similar games that launched on the original Switch for $60.

IGN asked Nintendo of America Vice President of Product and Player Experience Bill Trinen about Mario Kart World’s price tag in an April interview. “Our general approach is really just focus on what’s the content, what’s the value, and what’s an appropriate price based on that,” said Trinen.
