Today's edition of quick hits:
* USPS: "House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that President Donald Trump's postmaster general has no intention of restoring mail equipment or funding overtime hours he cut, despite public outcry that operational changes are undermining service before the November election."
* In related news: "House leaders posted revised text of legislation the chamber plans to take up on Saturday that would provide the Postal Service with $25 billion to cover revenue losses, reverse service and operational changes implemented earlier this year, and require that all election-related mail, including ballots, be treated as first-class mail to ensure priority delivery."
* More campuses close: "The University of Notre Dame has halted in-person classes for two weeks, after the private institution recorded a swarm of coronavirus infections barely a week after starting the semester.... Michigan State University also announced Tuesday that it is rolling back its plan to bring students back to campus ahead of its Sept. 2 start."
* As part of a compromise, Democrats asked Republicans to propose a larger bill. Senate GOP leaders are responding with a smaller one: "Senate Republicans on Tuesday began circulating text of a narrow coronavirus relief package that would revive extra unemployment benefits at half the original rate, shield businesses from lawsuits related to the virus and provide funding for testing and schools."
* On a related note: "Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday that talks remain stalled between Republicans and Democrats over another round of stimulus funding, though bipartisan appetite for a deal remains high."
* The upcoming hearings with the USPS chief will be difficult: "Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who has come under fire for his continuing financial ties to a company that does business with the Postal Service, received $1.2 million to $7 million in income last year from that firm, according to financial disclosure forms reviewed by The New York Times."
* California: "Lightning-sparked wildfires swept across Northern California on Wednesday, scorching huge swaths of sun-parched land and leading to orders for thousands to evacuate, officials said. Smoke from more than three dozen blazes in counties just outside the cities of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland led to alerts in some Bay Area communities for residents to stay inside."
* Law enforcement: "Fatal shootings by police officers did not appear to ease up even amid the coronavirus pandemic, and Blacks, Latinos and Native Americans continue to be disproportionately affected by deadly police shootings compared to white people, a study released Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union found."
