Today’s edition of quick hits.
* At the U.N.: “Facing down a mass walkout and mounting diplomatic pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Friday to ‘finish the job’ as he defied growing isolation over his military’s devastating assault on the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu was met by a mix of jeers and applause as he spoke to a half-empty room at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.”
* This incident was captured on video, and the woman in question was taken to a local hospital after hitting her head: “A federal immigration officer was ‘relieved of his duties’ and is under investigation after he shoved an Ecuadorean woman whose husband had been arrested and pushed her to the floor at an immigration courthouse in Manhattan, the Department of Homeland Security said on Friday.”
* Inflation isn’t over: “Core inflation was little changed in August, according to the Federal Reserve’s primary forecasting tool, likely keeping the central bank on pace for interest rate reductions ahead. The personal consumption expenditures price index posted a 0.3% gain for the month, putting the annual headline inflation rate at 2.7%, the Commerce Department reported Friday.”
* It looks like Sinclair caved: “Sinclair, the broadcast station owner that took ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ off the air amid criticism of the host’s comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, said that the show will return Friday night on the company’s ABC affiliates.”
* More tariffs, higher prices: “President Trump on Thursday announced a slew of steep tariffs on pharmaceuticals, semi trucks, kitchen cabinets and furniture, saying import taxes on those products would go into effect on Oct. 1. The effects of the new tariffs are likely to be felt across sectors of the economy, from housing and health care to logistics. The tariffs range from 25 percent to 100 percent, with the highest levies applying to ‘any branded or patented’ pharmaceutical product coming into the United States.”
* Seriously? “The hundreds of U.S. generals and admirals who have been ordered to attend an unusual meeting next week at a military base in Virginia are expected to hear a ‘rally the troops’ message based on the war-fighter culture that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has sought to infuse into the Pentagon, a senior Trump administration official said on Friday.”
* Speaking of the beleaguered secretary showing poor judgment: “Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced that he has decided that the 19 soldiers who received the Medal of Honor for their actions in 1890 at Wounded Knee will keep their awards in a video posted to social media Thursday evening.”
* The revolving door keeps spinning: “Chad Mizelle, the Department of Justice chief of staff and a close ally of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, will step down in the coming weeks to return to his family in Tampa, Axios reported on Tuesday.”
Have a safe weekend.
