The Financial Times' Ed Luce discusses his New York Times guest essay 'The Dinner That Helped Save Europe,' which looks at Pope John Paul II's first visit to the U.S. as pope in 1979. During the visit, he met with President Jimmy Carter at the White House. Shortly after he also met with Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter’s national security adviser, at the Vatican Embassy in Washington.
