Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* The latest USA Today/Suffolk University poll found Donald Trump still leading the Republican Party’s presidential field with 58% support. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is a distant second with 12%, followed closely by former Ambassador Nikki Haley at 11%. No one else from the GOP field topped 3% in this survey.
* Politico reported that Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, running out of time and options, is “moving nearly all” of his Republican presidential campaign’s resources to Iowa “in a bid to reenergize his faltering” candidacy.
* On a related note, the editorial board of Scott’s hometown newspaper, The Post and Courier, is encouraging the senator and his 2024 rivals to quit the presidential race and clear the field for Haley, in the hopes of setting up a one-on-one contest between the former ambassador and the Republican frontrunner.
* With two weeks remaining before Kentucky’s gubernatorial campaign, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear debated state Attorney General Daniel Cameron again last night, and the incumbent challenged the Republican to answer whether he supports school vouchers or not. It didn’t go especially well.
* Wealthy businessman Perry Johnson dropped out of the presidential race last week, and this week, the Michigan Republican formally endorsed Trump’s 2024 candidacy.
* In Maryland’s U.S. Senate race: Angela Alsobrooks, county executive for Prince George’s County, is starting to consolidate Democratic support in important ways: Maryland Gov. Wes Moore threw his support behind her this week.
* And in Montana, much of the Republican establishment has rallied behind businessman Tim Sheehy’s U.S. Senate candidacy, the GOP field is still growing: Former Public Service Commissioner Brad Johnson has joined the Republican primary field.
